How it all started

founded by Charles “NOOK Turner” Byrd, Dorothy Turner & Sharon Ellerby in 1997

The concept for Jump On It came into being in 1996 when Mrs. Dorothy Turner, a long time community activist, met the 16 year old Charles Byrd, a.k.a. NOOK, at the Turn Your Back on Violence community forum.  Mrs. Turner issued a City-wide call for youth to come forward with ideas and initiatives on how to re-instill a sense of pride and usefulness into Rosewood Park, one of the oldest parks in Austin, located on the historic East Side.

NOOK did not shy away from this responsibility.  Instead, he established a youth committee that formulated the vision and goal of an event with great promise.  Acting as a tool for guidance and mentoring, Mrs. Turner instilled in the committee an unwavering capacity and need to do things right. The original series was held every Wednesday during the summer from 1997 – 2003. Since then Jump On It has produced single concerts, community benefits and school drop out prevention conferences until bringing the entire series back in 2014.

Established in 1997 and led by youth, Jump On It’s uniqueness lies in our ability to engage thousands of people by fusing live entertainment, education, games, market place and workshops weekly for the entire summer. During its years of operation Jump On It averages 1500-3000 people weekly (peaking at 10,000) making it one of the largest, if not the largest outdoor urban concert series in Texas. Jump On It’s civic engagement has become a tradition that people utilize, participate and depend on.

Community building and engagement is our number one priority. We work hand in hand with the City of Austin and other non-profits to promote health awareness and provide a stage for the public to promote important causes. We utilize celebrities and people with large influence to share inspiring messages. Jump On It also features a vendor market that allows local businesses to generate revenue by selling products and food. The local economy is stimulated through the large amount of our participants that come back and patronize East Austin on a weekly basis. Jump On It plays a transparent role in social development by bringing people together of all ages, income and ethnicities.
